AI chatbots for small business: where to actually start.
Not with an autonomous sales agent. Here's the narrow, low-risk starting point most small businesses should build first — and what has to be ready before you turn it on.

Start with support, not sales
The lowest-risk, highest-value place to start with an AI chatbot is answering the questions your team already answers a dozen times a day — hours, pricing ranges, what services you offer, how to book, where you're located. It's a narrow job, which is exactly why it's a good first one: the chatbot has a clear boundary, a clear escalation point, and a clear way to measure whether it's helping. Skipping straight to an autonomous sales agent that's supposed to negotiate, quote, or close is a much harder problem, and it's usually not where the early value is anyway.
What to prepare before you turn one on
- Your actual FAQ content gathered in one place — the chatbot is only as good as what it's given to work with
- A clear, visible path to a real person for anything outside its lane
- Explicit boundaries on what it should never attempt — pricing negotiation, medical or legal advice, anything that needs a human's judgment
- A way to review past conversations, so you can see what customers are actually asking and fix gaps
Where to go next
Once a support chatbot is working, the natural next steps build on the same foundation: intelligent document processing that extracts data from forms and paperwork instead of someone re-keying it, lead scoring and routing so the right inquiry reaches the right person automatically, internal copilots that help your own staff move faster, and LLM integration (OpenAI, Anthropic, and others) built directly into the tools you already run rather than bolted on as a separate app. Each of those is a bigger project than a support chatbot — which is exactly why the chatbot is the right place to start.
