A gear shop and a taproom, built to read as one brand instead of two businesses sharing a building.
South Dakota Outdoor Shop is a Custer, SD outdoor retailer and taproom in the heart of the Black Hills, pairing camping, climbing, and outdoor gear with local craft beer and guided-adventure partnerships. The brand and site needed to hold both halves together as one identity — and get found by travelers passing through, not just locals who already know the place.

The challenge
Gear and beer under one roof is a genuinely great idea for a Black Hills tourist town — and a genuinely easy thing to make look like two mismatched businesses sharing a lease. The brand and site needed to sell both halves as one identity, work for a browsing pattern with a lot of out-of-town, on-the-phone traffic passing through Custer, and get found by travelers who don't yet know the shop exists.
The approach
We built one brand around "Gear · Beer · Adventure" instead of treating the shop and the taproom as separate ideas, structured the site for a mobile, on-the-road visitor deciding where to stop, and built local SEO around Black Hills outdoor tourism searches — the exact moment a traveler is looking for a place like this.
- A single brand identity uniting the retail shop and taproom instead of splitting them
- Mobile-first site built for travelers browsing on the road through Custer and the Black Hills
- Product and gear categories organized for quick browsing, alongside the taproom and adventure side of the business
- Local, technical & natural SEO built around Black Hills outdoor tourism and gear searches
